Alberta, CA Shows Progress in Online Gaming and Sports Betting
The Canadian province of Alberta is progressing towards establishing a competitive market for online gaming and sports betting.
Initially, the government expressed interest in adopting a model similar to Ontario’s, which includes a 20% tax rate. However, there is now growing discussion about raising this rate to 25% or higher. A critical Cabinet meeting is scheduled for September 24 to deliberate on this issue.
On September 19, iDEA submitted a letter to Minister Nally and Premier Danielle Smith, strongly advocating for a 20% tax rate and urging swift action to open the market. We have collaborated with key stakeholders to ensure that our letter is included in the information package that will be reviewed by the Cabinet during their upcoming meeting.
While there has been interest from some government officials in opening the market before the end of the year, we believe this timeline is unlikely due to the significant amount of preparatory work still required.
