California Files Two Sports Betting Ballot Initiatives

November 7, 2023

The two initiatives are “The Sports Wagering Regulation and Tribal Gaming Protection Act”, which can be read here and “The Tribal Gaming Protection Act”, which can be read here.

The long form measure authorizes in-person and online sports wagering, if operated by California tribes pursuant to compacts or laws enacted by the state and approved by tribes that meet the standards set forth in the measure. The short form measure amends the Constitution of California to prohibit the legislature from authorizing sports wagering by anyone other than California tribes.

The goal of the initiative proponents is to collect enough signatures and have the initiatives appear on the November 2024 ballot. Wagering could be offered no earlier than September 1, 2025. The legal age to bet would be 21.
