GA Bill Would Let Voters Choose Whether or Not to Repeal Sports Betting Ban

March 11, 2022

There is a Constitutional amendment bill coming in the very near future that would send to the ballot in November the question of whether to repeal or not Georgia’s ban on sports betting and gambling.

Then, it would be up the voters to decide whether or not to repeal the ban. There would also be associated enabling legislation for sports betting. While this bill has not been introduced (as of yet) we did obtain a draft outline of a proposal that would authorize up to 14 OSB. 8 tethered to sports teams, 3 for companies with ties to Georgia, and 3 untethered.

Concerns have been raised whether voters would support a broad gambling expansion referendum in November. With the Governor on the ballot as well, there may be a political calculus for him to oppose gambling to appease conservative voters.
