GA: Constitutional Amendment Bill In Works
We understand that Rep. Stephens is preparing to push a Constitutional amendment bill as soon as next week. This bill would amend the already passed Senate sports wagering bill and would send the issue to the November ballot to let the voters decide whether to repeal or not Georgia’s ban on sports betting and gambling.
While this bill has not been introduced (as of yet) we did obtain a draft outline of a proposal that would authorize up to 14 OSB. 8 tethered to sports teams, 3 for companies with ties to Georgia, and 3 untethered.
Concerns have been raised whether voters would support a broad gambling expansion referendum in November. With the Governor on the ballot as well, there may be a political calculus for him to oppose gambling to appease conservative voters.
iDEA will monitor developments and will seek opportunities to engage with lawmakers and stakeholders as warranted.
