Maryland’s Senate Budget and Tax Briefing + iDEA Meeting with Speaker Staff
MD’s Senate Budget and Tax held a briefing this week, and Innovation Group explained their study. Potential cannibalization and job loss continue to be areas of concern for some lawmakers.
House lawmakers plan to cross-file a bill, which can be amended to address concerns. The House is the chamber where the legislation will first move. At this moment, the Senate is not as supportive as the House.
Senator Watson bill is still on hold as stakeholders provide input.
iDEA met with the Speaker’s staff to discuss possible tax structures and other considerations for bill. The Speaker is taking an active role in what the House will consider. Chairwoman Atterbury could be the lead house sponsor and we are engaging with her office as well.
Team is developing concepts that could address lawmakers’ equity and inclusion priorities. Must strike balance between what will earn support of key lawmakers, but also be constitutional.
We’re also conducting a focused analysis of PA iGaming/retail market to show it will not harm land-based casinos in MD.
