States Most Likely to Legalize Sports Betting in 2019: Jeff Ifrah Joins Other Experts in Handicapping the Odds for Sports Handle
SportsHandle, a news site focused on the most up-to-date information on sports betting regulation in the United States, interviewed several gaming experts including iDEA Founder Jeff Ifrah on which states are most likely to pass sports betting bills in 2019.
SportsHandle aggregated the predictions of authorities like Mr. Ifrah; Robert DellaFave, COO of the US Bets Network; Shawn Fluharty, Member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and sponsor of that state’s successful sports betting bill; and Sara Slane, Senior VP of Public Affairs at the American Gaming Association (AGA). Their final predictions – the “Power 15” – are listed here.
Mr. Ifrah commented on the impending bill in Washington DC, which garnered the Number 1 spot in the rankings and is expected to pass before the end of 2018. He noted that “The DC Council appears poised to operate its sports betting program through the DC Lottery. This could become a trend in subsequent states. New Mexico is a lottery model, and Delaware is too.”
He also commented on what could happen in Virginia: “Virginia will be interesting because both Virginia and Washington, DC may legalize sports betting but neither have casinos in their jurisdiction. This ‘no casino’ model will be interesting to watch as they will need to come up with a new model that has not been implemented before in other states. This is more like the European model.”
