Proposal to Open Alberta Market for iGaming and Sports Betting Rejected
September 25, 2024
The proposal put forward by Minister Nally to open the market for online gaming and sports betting was rejected by the Cabinet.
Notably, the rejection wasn’t driven by concerns over tax rates but rather centered on the perceived “weak” regulatory model. Cabinet members expressed the need for stronger governance across various areas. It appears that this decision will lead to further consultations with industry and other stakeholders as the government reassesses its approach. Given this setback, it seems unlikely that Minister Nally’s goal of launching the market this year will be achieved.
