Legal Sports Report: 50 AGs Ask DOJ To Fight Illegal Online Casino, Sports Betting Sites

In a letter sent on Monday, fifty attorneys general asked the Department of Justice to help states curb the “rampant spread” of illegal online casino and sports betting sites. The letter cites an American Gaming Association report from November 2022 that estimated around $400 billion in illegal online casino and sports betting handle annually, translating to nearly $5 billion in lost tax revenue.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called for a ban on professional player prop bets on July 31. That ask, however, could be contrary to DeWine’s end game of a safe, regulated market. John Pappas, state advocacy director for the iDevelopment Economic Association (iDEA), commented, “An outright ban on prop bets may sound like a quick fix, but it misses the point.”
