Abbott Opens Door on Sports Betting While Senate Leadership and Casino Interests Create Complex Path Forward

Gov. Greg Abbott recently stated that he has no objection to legalization of sports betting.
However, Lt. Governor Patrick (also the President of the Texas Senate) remains opposed and has said he will not move off his opposition until a majority of Republican Senators come out in support of it.
Further complicating the situation is the push to legalize land-based casinos. This has even less support than sports betting, however, some businesses who are advocating for it have said they would actively oppose sports betting, if casino legislation does not also advance.
