Alabama House and Senate Struggle to Compromise on Gambling Package

April 19, 2024

A conference committee has been formed to negotiate a gambling legislative package between the House and Senate. The first meeting will occur next week.

The House and Senate are very far apart on their approach. The House included sports betting, commercial casinos and other expanded gambling, and the Senate stripped most of it out. Legislative advocates for sports betting are concerned that the vast differences between them will make it very difficult to reach a compromise. The legislature must pass the bills by a ⅗ vote, and then any approved bill must go to the voters in November to be ratified.
