Alabama House Introduces Comprehensive Gambling Bill

February 9, 2024

House members, with support of leadership, introduced HB 152, a comprehensive gambling bill that establishes commercial casinos, a state lottery, and retail/online sports betting.

The bill leaves most regulatory details for sports betting to the discretion of a newly created Gaming Commission. They would decide on the number of licenses, fees, etc. The bill does set a 17% tax rate for sports betting and permits deductions for excise tax and promos.

The bill is on an aggressive timeline. We expect hearings, committee votes, and vote on the House floor next week.

Any bill passed by the legislature will need to be affirmed by the voters in November.
