GA Legislative Leaders Raise Optimism for Betting Expansion
February 11, 2022
Recent statements from legislative leaders are raising optimism for sports betting (and perhaps other gaming) expansion to be included on the ballot for voters in November. Lawmakers would need to approve the ballot measure before the end of March.
Sports betting legislation advanced last year, but was held up because of political conflicts on voting rights legislation.
The most likely path towards legalization is for the legislature to approve language for a ballot initiative. Doing so would avoid a potential constitutional challenge that has many lawmakers concerned. The ballot initiative would allow Georgia voters to decide this November whether to authorize sports betting in the state.
