Maine’s LD 1777 Fails to Pass in the House and Senate

April 12, 2024

On April 9th, the “ought to pass as amended” version of LD 1777 failed to pass in the House.

On April 10th, this same version failed in the Senate. In Maine, committees can issue differing reports on a single bill, which is the case for LD 1777. The House forwarded the bill’s “ought not to pass” version to the Senate. The Senate tabled this version on April 10th.

This bill is still alive; However, time to pass it is short as the Legislature adjourns on April 17th. The bill sponsor stated that legislators are taking time to learn more about the bill before taking a potential final vote. Even if the bill passes the Legislature, it is possible that the Governor vetoes it.
