Massachusetts Gaming Board Meeting on Sports Wagering (Oct 27): Key Takeaways

October 28, 2022

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) held a meeting to discuss sports wagering on Thursday, 10/27.  Here are our key take-aways:

  • MGC approved the Sports Wagering License Evaluation regulation (see 205 CMR 218)
  • MGC discussed, but did not vote on, Sports Wagering Operator Licensing Framework set of regulations (see 205 CMR 212 – DRAFT)
  • MGC will be sending all prospective operators an email with application instructions.
  • MGC is requesting that operators share a list of vendors so they can reach out to them to begin the licensing process.
  • Massachusetts staggered sports betting launch windows (for retail and mobile) will remain unchanged at this time.

KEY DATES

  • Nov 21 – Operator applications due (subject to change)
  • Launch Dates:
    • Retail = Prior to Super Bowl
    • Mobile = mid-March

iDEA is closely monitoring developments in Massachusetts and will continue to provide input to the MGC as they develop rules and regulations.

iDEA played a role in shaping the final policies in the bill, and we are pleased that many key items we advocated for were adopted by the legislature. iDEA’s letter to all 6 members of the conference committee is here.
