New Jersey Senate and Assembly Committees to Hold Joint Hearing on Online Sports Betting Impact

October 22, 2024

The New Jersey Senate Committee on State Government, Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation posted for a joint committee hearing with the New Jersey Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee for this Thursday, October 24th at 10 am.

Per the posting, “The committee will receive testimony from invited speakers on the topic of online sports betting and its impact on the State.” Here is the link to the committee hearing posting. The hearing will likely be streamed via this link: https://njleg.state.nj.us/live-proceedings.

The Vice Chair of this committee (Sen McKeon) is the lawmaker who has introduced legislation to raise the sports betting and iGaming tax rate to 30 percent. While the NJ legislature is still technically in session, a tax bill such as this is unlikely to proceed as they have already completed their work on the 2025 budget. But we should expect to see this bill re-emerge next year in NJ.

Below is a list of those invited to testify at Thursday’s joint committee hearing:

  • Felicia Grondin, Director, The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey
  • Dr. Lia Nower, Director, Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University
  • Hilary Chebra, Manager, Government Affairs, The Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey
  • Dr. Jane Bokunewicz, Director, the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality & Tourism
  • Tim Buckley, Senior Vice President of External Affairs, NCAA
  • Sports Betting Operators:
    • Jeremy Kudon, President, The Sports Betting Alliance
    • Lori Kalani, Chief Responsible Gaming Officer, DraftKings
